I am invisible.
Being treated as invisible.
It's like being invisible.
Written in the wake of the 'Sagamihara Disability Facility Killing Incident' that occurred in Japan in 2016, The Question of Faeries deals with objects of discrimination and hatred in modern Japanese society - the beings that people do not want to see or pretend not to see. It relativizes extremely "human" issues such as appearance, eugenics and prenatal diagnosis from the perspective of non-human beings, such as mutant cockroaches and symbiotic bacteria, raising radical questions about human life and sex.
Satoko Ichihara is a playwright, director and novelist, the current artistic director of the Kinosaki International Art Center and, since 2011, the leader of her own theatre company Q. Born in Osaka, Japan in 1988, Satoko grew up in Fukuoka before studying theatre at Obirin University. Through a unique theatrical language and physical sensibility her work deals with human behaviour and anxiety arising from bodily physiology. In 2011, Bugs won the Aichi Foundation Drama Award, and in 2017, Favonia's Fruitless Fable was nominated for the Kishida Kunio Drama Award, Japan's most prestigious award for contemporary theatre. In 2019, she published a novel entitled Mamito's Angel. Her latest work, The Goddess of Bacchus-Holstein's Cows, with a Greek tragedy motif, premiered at the Aichi Triennale and was honoured with the 64th Kishida Kunio Drama Award. Satoko is a Fellow of the Saison Foundation.
Kim Beo-kyung is a performer based in Seoul and a member of Shinsegae Theatre Company. Her credits include Aurora of Love, I am a Madman, Lifestyle, Princesses, Forgetting Dance_4.16, Return to Korea, Hye-seok Na. In 2017 Beo-kyung received the 38th Seoul Theatre Festival Rookie of the Year Award.
